Paphiopedilum Velvet Spot x Lancer

I think that plants are food for imagination. When l admire the flower I imagine a medieval castle. I hear sounds of a lute and a harp, I enjoy creations of minstrels. Blooming Paphiopedilum Velvet Spot x Lancer looks like a noble knight. The flower has a big white top petal with a yellow center and unusual vinaceous patterns. Another petals of this orchid and the labellum are dark red with green-yellow borders. Also two lateral petals have a patterns at the bottom. This Lady slipper orchid has got the light green leaves.

Paph. Velvet Spot x Lancer is starting to bloom

Paphiopedilum Velvet Spot x Lancer care is similar to another hybrid Paphiopedilums care. The Lady slipper orchid doesn't need bright light. It can grow at a shading place. This plant prefers humid air, regular watering and draught protect. A hybrid Paph. isn't a capricious houseplant. Even the beginners can cultivate this beautiful orchid.

Paphiopedilum Lippewunder hybrid care

Do you like big slippers? Don't say "No"! I'm going to show you Paphiopedilum Lippewunder hybrid. It's an amazing Lady slipper orchid with a huge flower. A Paphiopedilum Lippewunder hybrid 's "shoe" is glossy, colorful and chic. I call this flower "the pirate who laugh" because its labellum resembles the smile of a sea robber. Please, look at the photo:

The orchid who laugh

Flowers of this paphiopedilum are green-yellow with a big labellum and dark red stripes and patterns. Orchid sellers often publish this paphiopedilum's photos with a ruler that to show size of the phyto-slippers. Flowers of Paph. Lippewunder hybrid may reach 7,87 inches (20 centimetres)! I have taken photos of this orchid without a ruler. However the flower is a giant, indeed:

Paphiopedilum Lippewunder hybrid

Paph. Lippewunder hybrid is a nice and gorgeous orchid

The orchid prefers bright diffuse light, humid air and room temperature. We must use soft and warm water for watering this flower. Also we have to protect it from draught. A right soil for this paphiopedilum is small chunks of bark. You may add coco chips to this soil as well.

On the pictures: The orchid in The Flo Orchidarium. I'm author of the photos.

A Thanksgiving cactus care: Why does a Christmas cactus not bloom?

A Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera) is beautiful even without the flowers. The plant looks like a big green crab thanks to its unusual stems-"nippers". However we grow this phyto-alien for its blooming. A Schlumbergera's flowers resemble colorful lanterns. Usually this cactus flowers in December. Also we call this houseplant a Christmas cactus. Today I would like to devote my post to a Thanksgiving cactus care. I'm going to answer the question: "Why does a Christmas cactus not bloom?".

A Christmas cactus (A Thanksgiving cactus)

In truth, getting a Thanksgiving cactus to bloom is easier than getting desert cacti to flower indoor. The "green crab" doesn't need direct sunlight and doesn't demand dry wintering in a cool room in contrast to its desert "kin". However sometimes a Christmas cactus doesn't want to bloom. Our green friend has a few reasons for that:

1. The plant is too young. If you grow Schlumbergera from a cutting, you ought to know that the cactus is able to bloom in 2-3 years (sometimes in 4-5 years!) after the rooting.

A Christmas cactus looks like a big green crab

2. A dark place. The plant isn't able to bloom if it grows in the shade. A Christmas cactus needs bright diffuse light.

3. Lack of rest period. Schlumbergera needs short rest period when daylight hours shorten. In October/November we ought to diminish frequency of the plant watering. Also in this period we ought to locate the cactus in a room having temperature 59-64 degrees Fahrenheit (15-18 degrees Celsius). In other months this green person prefers room temperature.

Schlumbergera

4. Transposition. We shouldn't move a Christmas cactus when the budding starts or else the plant may shed the buds.

5. Dry air. Also the plant shed the buds and the flowers if air is dry. The "December cactus" adores humid air and likes spraying.

5. Soil depletion. The cactus may refuse to bloom if the soil is emaciated. In this case, please, transplant the houseplant. Thanksgiving cacti like mellow soil.

6. Over-watering. Another reason of a Thanksgiving cactus unblooming is over-watering. Of course, we should water this plant more frequent than desert cactuses. Nevertheless a bog in the pot is inadmissible. We must water the plant when a topsoil is dry. Also over-watering of the cactus produces abscission the segments of stems.

A Miniature rose: buying and adaptation

A rose is called Queen of flowers. In order that the queen governs at your flower kingdom you ought to choose a healthy plant. Today I would like to share my experience of how to buy a Miniature rose and adapt it at home.

A Miniature rose: buying in a flower shop

My red Miniature rose in a pot

1. A rose's flower is a unearthly beauty, indeed. However first of all I look at the leaves and the stems. They should not be dry, yellowed, rusty and dark. These symptoms indicate that the plant wither. The rose care will be very difficult in this case. Unfortunately, the plant may die. I never buy a wither rose though I grow six this plants at my home (I'm rose fan!). Especially I'm afraid of a white "flour" on the leaves. It indicates on rose powdery mildew. Usually I choose a rose with green healthy leaves.

2. I always try to buy a Miniature rose with shoots. This green queen is a powerful and viable.

3. When the weather is frosty even the short distance between the shop and your car may be fatal for a Miniature rose. If you going to buy the flower in winter, please, ask the seller to pack up the plant. If the soil is dry it will be perfect condition for transportation of houseplants in cool season. The rose's roots will not freeze in this case. If the soil is wet a good package is able to defend the roots of cold.

A Miniature rose: adaptation at home

My white Miniature rose in a pot

1. Some of rose lovers advise to make a mini hothouse for a Miniature rose after the buying. I never do it. I think that a healthy plant doesn't need hothouses. On the contrary, a rose without this "device" accommodates to home conditions better than a plant in a mini hothouse, IMHO. Also I never cut off the fresh flowers and buds.

In the shopping day I locate my miniature roses at a shading place. Of course, I water and spray the plants. Gradually I train my green friends to bright light during 2-3 days.

2.  Then I locate the flowers at light place. I continue to water and spray my green queens daily.

My red Miniature rose is flowering
In period of adaptation a Miniature rose might shed leaves and buds. Don't worry about it! If the stem stays green, the queen in a pot doesn't wither. The green person will grow and flower.

3. In 2-3 weeks after the buying the roses are ready to transplantation. We should to transplant our green friends without fail because usually in shops Miniature roses grow in peat soil.

This kind of soil is unsuitable for our new flowers. I will tell you later how to transplant a Miniature rose.

Poinsettia (a Christmas star plant)
 1. A Christmas star (Poinsettia).

This charming plant is a wonderful natural decoration in a pot. A Christmas star care is not very difficult. However this "winter" houseplant is a southerner. Poinsettia's motherland is Mexico and Central America. Therefore a Christmas star doesn't stand cold. It prefers room temperature. Also a red "flower" of the plant is a perianth, indeed. Poinsetia's flowers are small and ordinary (however testes differ). Please, don't throw out the plant after blossom fading. A Christmas star can flower in next year.

A Christmas cactus
 2. A Christmas cactus or a Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera).

As you know, this popular splendid plant blooms in winter. Sometime it may flower on Christmas eve. Therefore the succulent called a Christmas cactus. Schlumbergera is a real cactus. Nevertheless it likes a regular watering. Also this green person adores spraying. A Thanksgiving cactus prefers a moisture because Schlumbergera's habitat is tropical rainforests.

A Lucky shamrock
3. A Lucky shamrock (Oxalis).

The unpretentious and beautiful plant is an amazing Christmas gift. A Lucky shamrock is a natural clock in a pot. This green person opens the leaves in the morning and closes theirs in the evening. Also the plant closes its green (or violet!) richness if light is too bright.

A Winter cherry

4. A Winter cherry or a Jerusalem cherry (Solanum).

The main decoration of this gorgeous houseplant is colorful berries. Usually they ripen in winter. Therefore Solanum also known as a Winter cherry. Unfortunately a Christmas cherry's berries are toxic. I don't recommend to eat it.

A ivy

How to use a coco coir

Plant lovers often use a coco coir (a coco peat) for planting, seeding and even rooting their green "phyto-friends". This product of a coconut is an excellent soil for sprouting seeds and rooting cuttings. The coir is water-permeable and loose. We can buy coco bricks or coco tablets. Today I would like to tell you about how to use a coco coir.

A coco coir
1. Take your coco brick or tablet and deep it in a vessel of water. If your coco peat is a tablet you may use a small plastic glass. My coco coir is bigger than a pill:

A coco peat takes a bath :)
 "Snip, snap, snurre...":

A "coco soil"
You will get a soft soil instead of a hard brick in a few minutes. Now this coco peat is ready for usage and you may plant your lovely flower. I planted my vanilla orchid in a "coconut" yesterday:

A vanilla orchid in a coco coir
Orchid lovers say that it is a perfect soil for a vanilla vine.

Also you can mix a coco coir with an another soil (for example, to mix with a humus).

How to root a vanilla orchid: Let's grow Vanilla planifolia from cuttings

Vanilla planifolia (a vanilla orchid) is an amazing tropical vine with big fragrant flowers. We can grow this gorgeous plant indoor. Even we can get vanilla gardens on our windowsills. Vanilla planifolia propagate from cuttings. Today I'm going to tell you about how to root a vanilla orchid.

A Vanilla planifolia variegata's cutting with a root. It's ready for planting.

Experts recommend to root the plant in a soil. We should make a mini hothouse and locate a green friend there. But this way isn't easy for amateurs. Unfortunately, we can make a mistake and a cutting will rot. However one of plant lovers told me about a simple method of a vanilla orchid rooting. It's rooting in vessel of water. In this case you need water, a glass and patience.

1. Take a glass of boiled water and deep a cutting there. (You may use even a plastic glass). Attention!  Only a part of the stem can be in the fluid. The leaves should not be in water or else a vanilla orchid may rot.

Vanilla planifolia variegata

2. Locate it at a light place.

3. Add water to the glass from time to time.

4. Wait for a root.

A root doesn't rot.

That's all!

It's very easy, indeed.

When a root grows to 1,5-2 inches (4-5 centimeters) you may plant out the orchid. My consultant recommends to use coco coir.

P.S. I got my small vanilla orchid's cutting 3 months ago. (It is lovely Vanilla planifolia variegata with variegated leaves). The plant had no roots. I've kept my "phyto-pet" in a plastic glass of water. True, the top became black in the month before last.

I cut a bad part of stem. Lately my Vanilla planifolia variegata feels fine. The cutting has a good "white tail" and ready for planting.

A spruce in a pot: how to grow the Christmas tree indoor

I often think about what can happen if each of us cut a spruce for Christmas. I imagine a terrible spectacle. It's a waste area instead of a coniferous forest. Therefore I've refused to decorate the felled Christmas tree. The author of this blog has cultivated a conifer indoor. Today I'm going to tell you about how to grow a spruce in a pot.

A Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca Conica)

At our houses we can cultivate not only a spruce. You may choose a pine or even a stone pine, for example. However I've grown a Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca Conica). It's an amazing plant for a small space because this evergreen tree has a small size. But we'll discuss about it later.

First of all I would like to enumerate reasons why we need to cultivate a conifer indoor

A Christmas tree in a pot
1. We protect Nature and don't cut trees for our amusement.

2. Conifers have a wonderful smell.

3. These plants clean air, as you know.

4. You should not sweep daily because the trees don't shed needles as opposed to felled conifers.

5. Your Christmas Day will be unforgettable, thanks to natural Christmas tree in a pot.

A Christmas tree care. A spruce is not a houseplant. And Picea glauca Conica is not an indoor plant too. These green friends prefer freedom. However we can cultivate conifers in flats a short while.

Experts allow to locate the Christmas tree in a cool room in winter. We even may accommodate it in a warm living room and decorate the plant for Christmas. We must spray it as often as possible because the plant is afraid of dry air. Of course, we can not use candles and electric garlands in the capacity of decorations. However scent of natural spruce is better than these items.

A spruce in a pot
After the Holiday we should locate the tree in a cool room again. (I've cultivated my green queen on the recessed balcony). A spruce needs regular watering. It prefers diffused light. Experts recommend to plant out  this tree outdoor in spring

Some of plant lovers grow small spruces in pots at gardens or at verandas in spring and summer. In cool season they locate the trees indoor.

My own experience of spruces cultivation. I gave my first spruce to a gardener 2 years ago. The plant lives in a garden. However my second Christmas tree doesn't want to grow outdoor. In last spring I transplanted it in a new pot. I used a special soil for conifers.

My coniferous queen
My beautiful Picea glauca Conica feels fine at my glazed loggia even in summer. It bears heat and bright light. The tree breathes fresh air because I open the window often. Also I water the conifer daily.

Why this outdoor plant feels fine at the flat? I don't know. But I like this tree. Of course, I'm going to decorate my Dwarf Alberta Spruce on Christmas eve.

Have you cultivated a conifer indoor?

Fragrant houseplants for you: aromatic flowers and scented leaves

Who is the greatest perfumer in the world? It is Nature, on my honest opinion. For example, rose's scent surpasses any luxury perfume. You can grow green gifts of Nature instead of spraying synthetic home fragrances. Today I'm going to tell you about excellent aromatic indoor plants.

Top 12 fragrant houseplants for your delight

A miniature rose
1. A miniature rose.

Aromatic: flowers.

The Queen of Flowers is possessed a very nice odor, as you know. Roses are garden plants. However we can grow a miniature rose indoor. (I cultivate six roses bush on my windowsill!).

This green queen prefers bright light, regular watering and fertilizing during April to August. In winter the plant resembles a bear. Usually it dens up in cold season. Rose's "den" is a shady cool place. In February/March the bush wakes up. It requires light locus and room temperature. Unfortunately this flower hates heat and dry air. I spray my miniature roses as often as possible.

A myrtle... a miracle...
 2. A myrtle (Myrtus communis).

Aromatic: leaves and flowers.

Myrtus communis known as a Common myrtle. But it isn't an ordinary plant. The leaves and the flowers exhale an excellent aroma. Also this green friend cleans air in a room. Myrtle volatile production can kill pathogenic microbes.
An extra necessary condition for myrtle cultivation is a cool temperature in winter. It's 41-44,6 degrees Fahrenheit (5-7 degrees Celsius). If you locate Myrtus communis near a radiator in winter the tree may die because it doesn't bear dry air. Also this plant needs bright light all year round.

Sansevieria trifasciata
3. A Sansevieria (a Snake plant).

Aromatic: flowers.

This widespread houseplant has many names. A Sansevieria is called Devil's tongue, Snake plant, Pike's tail, Saint Gergre's sword, Mother-in-low's tongue, Snake tongue, Bowstring hemp, Leopard lily etc. I like Leopard lily nickname because the succulent has charming fragrant flowers with  scent of lily. A Sansevieria blooms at night.

The succulent needs bright diffused light for flowering. This plant is able to grow in the shade but it can't bloom in this case.

Hoya carnosa
4. A Hoya (a Wax plant or a Porcelain flower).

Aromatic: flowers.

Hoya flowers look like baskets. It seems that these baskets contains perfumes. The flowers have a incomparable odor.

A Wax plant is a succulent Liana. It hates draught and overwetting. A Porcelain flower likes bright light, seldom watering and small flowerpots. Also a Hoya prefers a warm shower sometimes. This procedure stimulates a flowering.

A miltoniopsis
5. Orchids.

Aromatic: flowers.

The Orchid Family includes many scented "green members". There are a Vanilla orchid, a Miltonia, a Miltoniopsis, a Dendrobium, a Coelogyne, a Cattleya, a Cymbidium, a Neofinetia (a Fuukiran), some of Phalaenopsis sorts etc.

What is the orchid scent? It is not a simple question. I have smelled orchid flowers with aroma of vanilla, candy, lily of the valley, wild flowers, citrus and even pepper.

Plectranthus fruticans
 6. Plectranthus fruticans.

Aromatic: leaves.

If you touch this charming plant you can feel a magnetic smell of mint. Plectranthus fruticans has light green leaves with a perceptible nice fragrance. They say that moth is afraid of this scent. Therefore Plectranthus fruticans can save your wool carpets and plaids.

The green friend will be grateful for bright light in winter. But a plectranthus prefers shading in summer.

Pelargonium graveolens
7. A Scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens).

Aromatic: leaves.

Of course, you know this widespread grapeleaf plant. There are many Pelargonium graveolens varieties. We can buy Scented geraniums with smells of lemon, rose, apricot and even Cola.

The green friend bears dry air and the shade. Pelargonium graveolens care is not a big deal. This fragrant plant can grow indoor and outdoor as well. However the green person doesn't stand frost.

Murraya paniculata
8. Murraya paniculata (Orange Jessamine).

Aromatic: flowers.

One small flower of this effective tree is able to suffuse with fragrance a big room. The houseplant also known as Orange Jessamine, Japanese emperor tree. It is a fruit plant.

The tree needs good light and room temperature all year round. If you follow the blog you know that I dedicated one of my posts to Murraya paniculata care.

 9. A Madagascar jasmine, a Hawaiian wedding flower (Stephanotis floribunda).

Aromatic: flowers.

Bloom of this Liana has a perceptible scent of jasmine.

The green person prefers bright diffused light and humid air. In winter you should locate it in a room with temperature 57,2-60,8 degrees Fahrenheit (14-16 degrees Celsius). Winter freshness stimulates Stephanotis floribunda's blooming in summer.

Gardenia jasminoides
 10. A gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides).

Aromatic: flowers.

White or yellow gorgeous flowers of this plant look like roses. However a garnenia care is more difficult then a rose care, IMHO. The white princess needs room temperature only. It doesn't stand cool, heat, the shade, dry air and draught. This houseplant enjoys bright light.

Aroma of gardenia is a component of many luxury perfume compounds.

Eucalyptus viminalis
11. An eucalyptus.

Aromatic: leaves.

Some kinds of these trees-giants can grow on our windowsills. As you know, an eucalyptus is a medicinal plant. Also it cleans air in our houses. The scent of eucalyptus has nice balsamic notes.

Kalanchoe rhombopilosa care

Have you ever grown a jewel in a flowerpot? How about Kalanchoe rhombopilosa? This succulent looks like a precious stone or a silver butterfly. So, this unique plant is as unpretentious as beautiful. Today I would like to tell you about Kalanchoe rhombopilosa care.

Kalanchoe rhombopilosa

This succulent has unusual leaves with undulate margins. It isn't a big houseplant. Therefore it doesn't occupy much area at a windowsill. From my point of view, it's a positive side. I have been cultivating the succulent for 2 years. How to grow Kalanchoe rhombopilosa?

The precious stone or the silver butterfly

First of all, this green person needs bright light. It is a child of the sun. The phyto-alien likes direct sunlight. You should locate this succulent at the lightest place in your flat. Let it have a piece of sun-pie. The leaves of this houseplant will be bright and gorgeous. Unfortunately if you cultivate K. rhombopilosa in the shade, the plant may wither.

This kalanchoe isn't afraid of the heat. My succulent bears high temperature in Summer. Also this plant isn't afraid of dry air. It can be located near a radiator in winter.

Kalanchoe rhombopilosa likes bright light
You will like this succulent, because it doesn't need frequent watering. This phyto-occupant of the house hate over-wetting. Sometimes you can spray the plant. But do it only in hot days.

How often should we water this houseplant? It depends on the air temperature. The soil must be dry before watering. So, usually I wet K. rhombopilosa once a week. In this case I use softened water.

If you tear off a kalanchoe's leaf by accident, don't worry about it. The houseplant will not die. Also you can grow a new silver butterfly. K. rhombopilosa propagate from the leaves

I fertilize this plant once a month in Spring & Summer. I use special fertilizer for succulents. But I think the best food for this green person is... bright light. Of course, it's my honest opinion.

In Summer you can locate your green friend outdoor. The plant will enjoy your flower garden or your veranda. But the succulent needs rain protection.

Generally, Kalanchoe rhombopilosa care isn't a big deal. This plant is my teacher. It teaches me to be thankful for small mercies.

Murraya paniculata (Orange Jessamine) care secrets

Hi! I would like to devote this post to my lovely houseplant. It's Murraya paniculata or Orange Jessamine. This green person known as Japanese emperor tree. My Orange Jessamine makes me glad and... feeds me. Don't you believe me? Follow me!

Murraya paniculata
The Murraya blossom

This elegant sapling has fragrant flowers and very testy fruits. (The flowers has a perceptible jessamine aroma with a subtle nuance of a lemon). So, these tiny fruits look like berries. However, it is not the most important thing.

Japanese emperor tree or Orange Jessamine

Japanese emperor tree is a quite unpretentious houseplant. It doesn't require pruning and pollinating for fruiting. My green lady is a stoic. This small tree has resistance to plant pests. So, its branches are able to bloom and to fruit all year round. Would you like to find out anything more about it?

 Murraya care secrets

The Fruit garden on my windowsill
 1. Give it more sunshine! Of course, m. paniculata can be cultivated in the shade. But it needs to be a good light for fruiting. However, this green person doesn't accept direct sunlight! It needs  little shade in this case.
When I located my favorite plant near the west-facing window, I achieved the best result of Orange Jessamine growth.

My green lady
2. Let it hover! Please, don't put the collar of Japanese emperor tree too deep in the soil. The upper part of the root system must be located outside like roots of a bonsai. It looks like the tree to hovering over the soil. This method of planting keeps roots from rotting. I have learned this information from a expert horticulturalist. Unfortunately, many trees die because of a incorrect way of planting.

3. Protect roots! This plant has a fragile root system. Please, do a relocate by a transposition method. (I mean a relocate without destructing of a clod).

The roots of this fruit plant are long. Therefore this green person usually requires an elongated flowerpot.

4. Give some damp! Orange Jessamine needs humid air. This green lady will be grateful for regular spraying.

My secret. I use to arrange a warm shower for my beautiful plant once a month. I carry the sapling to my bathroom and spray it with warm water. Firstly, this procedure is a good method for cleaning. Secondly, it's a universal mode of training for many houseplants.

Extra necessary conditions for Murraya cultivation:

a) room temperature;

b) regular watering;

c) draught protect;

d) love :)

This plant can be propagated from seeds quite easily. By the way, I have a few Orange Jessamines at my house. It's a real Murraya garden on a windowsill!
